Kuala Lumpur is hot. Kuala Lumpur is humid. First thing we noticed was the diversity of all types of Asian people from Indian to Japanese. As someone who was only used to seeing Korean people on every street, seeing dark asians, light asians, big-eyed asians, small-eyed asians ... it was an explosion of asians. It rained, and we walked and walked all over that city.</div><div><br /></div><br /><div>Days 2 and 3- Phuket Airport to Patong Beach</div><div>The airport is full of taxi drivers who are fighting with all their might to give you a ride to your destination. Not knowing what to do, we decided that a minibus ride to the beach was a decent enough price for us to say "yes, we will wait an hour for you to bargain with more foreigners to ride your minibus and then let you drive me to some shady travel agency in the middle of nowhere and then finally take us to our guest house." We were dropped off at Jinny, which was a quaint and semi-charming guesthouse in Patong, and we immediately made our way to the beach. The beach was pristine. It was there that I saw the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen in my life. Patong Beach reminded me of Jaco, Costa Rica. Many tourists, many bars, okay shopping, awesome beach. We must have brought a plague to the jelly fish because, after a day in a half, they started to float to the shore asking to be skewerd by the Thai beach chair managers/servers. One of the jelly fish brushed Kalan's leg. Nedless to say, we left looking for an even more pristine beach the next day.</div><br /><div> </div><br /><div>Days 5 and 6-Kata Beach</div><div>Drink coconuts and beer on the beach-check</div><div>Follow crazy Europeans to explore an abandoned kayak where you can't touch the floor anymore-check</div><div>Drive a motorbike in another country-check</div><div>Scare Kalan on his first jet ski expirience- check</div><div>It was here where we spent the best time of our trip. Unforgettable. </div><div><br /></div><br /><div>Day 7- Bus from Phuket town to Bangkok</div><div>13 hours of shitty uncomfortable bus and the most disgusting bathrooms I've ever expirienced.</div><br /><div> </div><br /><div>Day 8- Bangkok</div><div>We arrived at 4 in the morning and took a taxi to Khaosan Street where, we were told, had a lot of guesthouses. At dawn, Khaosan Street consists of drunk Europeans who drank away the night and are waiting for the sun to rise, Rhasta guys saying "hey, my friend" to other Rhasta guys, ladyboys, and prostitutes. 6am hit and we checked in at the nearest guesthouse and slept. When we woke up and decided to look around, Khaosan Street turned into a colorful array of street venders, taxi drivers, tuk tuk drivers, and people from all over the world and all walks of life. It was information overload. We took a tuk tuk ride all over the city and saw all kinds of buddhas (Standing, big, lucky, lying down, gold, stone, hiding, black, flakey, but surprisingly no fat buddha with a fat rubbable belly), suit shops and gem stores.</div><br /><div> </div><br /><div>Day 9- Kachanaburi</div><div>The day before Kuchanburi we decided that we should go on an organized day trip and then head home. Our trip to Kuchanburi was long and fun. We were with 5 Koreans, which was ironic, and 3 Taiwanese people. Together we went to a cemetary (nothing like a cemetary in the morning), a war museum, the Bridge Over the River Kwai, the WWII Death Railway. Then we rode a bamboo raft down a river, went elephant trekking, and visited a waterfall. It was a busy day and it was incredibly fun. The next day we left Bangkok (first class woo woo), with our new tans, our massaged bodies, and our dreams for the future. And now, here in Barstow, Ca, operation find a job begins ...</div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-46040132098021205632010-04-17T09:31:00.004+09:002010-04-17T09:50:07.666+09:00You Better Work<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>15 days until Kalan and I jump on a plane and arrive in our next destination, saying goodbye to Seoul and our new wonderful friends that we've made. First, we will engulf ourselves in the beaches of South East Asia. We plan to visit Malaysia, Thailand, and hopefully Vietnam and Cambodia within a month. We're not sure if it's possible monetarily or time-wise but we are just going to just go and see what happens. No reservations hehe.<div><br /></div><div>After our trip there, we will be greeted back home with the love of our friends and family. I'm so excited to see everyone and know that I'm going to be there in their lives again. After the warm welcomes pass, we will be hit hard with the harsh reality of being unemployed and living with our parents. Sounds bad when you type it out but really I don't think it's a big deal at all. We hope to find jobs in the fields that we love and hopefully it wont take over a month. I guess we'll just have to search hard, interview well and dazzle the socks off everyone. </div><div><br /></div><div>As for me, I'm going to be applying for fashion merchandising jobs and fashion marketing/PR job.s I'm also going to be applying for internships and administrative jobs as well. I really just need to get my foot in the door (I'm beginning to hate this expression). Part-time work may also be inevitable. The important thing is that I stay positive and not stress out too much about life. Kalan and I are in it together and that's all that matters. Cheese but true. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-bofu0c3DEWZUZZDazOvCyUeyvt1E4VPbfe8dX3EllER4OALN5ulDrNPkNl4Xy6Uq6_Z7Vv5Vmgol18lsMUlCY06rb3G2IwRtkKWJAKbfDoRyZC4O6qSNd_dozEy0I56Ijce-kvrW6BEK/s1600/IMG_0562.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-bofu0c3DEWZUZZDazOvCyUeyvt1E4VPbfe8dX3EllER4OALN5ulDrNPkNl4Xy6Uq6_Z7Vv5Vmgol18lsMUlCY06rb3G2IwRtkKWJAKbfDoRyZC4O6qSNd_dozEy0I56Ijce-kvrW6BEK/s400/IMG_0562.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460900905429625906" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 225px; " /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRCXFCFSDbcygKPn1cjjRLaiOvSRGCtRKS47qeR26pFrBA63M6C5eLCovewMDA4MeRLAbWILVR7dw-RGkAX0zePN0DkwB4Kp1Hc98IZQ4wAnb2iV5dRynAS__DJHO2QE0ABDsq-AOtv_XE/s1600/IMG_0560.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRCXFCFSDbcygKPn1cjjRLaiOvSRGCtRKS47qeR26pFrBA63M6C5eLCovewMDA4MeRLAbWILVR7dw-RGkAX0zePN0DkwB4Kp1Hc98IZQ4wAnb2iV5dRynAS__DJHO2QE0ABDsq-AOtv_XE/s400/IMG_0560.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460900896265288386" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 225px; " /></a></div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-45655022130908520702010-04-09T20:29:00.003+09:002010-04-09T20:52:31.517+09:00Photo Shoot<div style="text-align: center;">Two shots from a recent shoot. It was an overnight boat so by the time we landed it was already morning. Unfortunately, I ended up throwing up ALL NIGHT due to either sea sickness, food poisoning, or a combination of the two. The next day, my body was completely exhausted but we ended up walking across practically the whole city to find our hotel. I slept that whole next day while <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Kalan</span> and Jesse looked around the city. The next day I was <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">rejuvenated</span> and was able to really see Fukuoka's beauty. The cherry blossoms were in bloom and the weather was perfect. While basking in the sun, we wondered why Seoul's weather sucks so bad. <div><br /></div><div>That evening we met up with our friend <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Kento</span> in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Kurume</span> which is a town about thirty minutes away. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Kento's</span> family and friends threw a BBQ in our honor. His family was really nice and the food they made was so good. There were cherry blossoms everywhere we went. <div><br /></div><div>Since the trip, however, I've had a cold and now I'm trying to recoup so that I can start training again for my 10k at the end of the month. This month, our agenda is to save money, work out, and enjoy Korea in the Spring. People anticipate that the cherry blossoms will bloom here within a week.</div><div><br /></div><div>I took a lot of pics and I'll post them soon. :) </div><div><br /></div><div>With love,</div><div><br /></div><div>Sylvia</div></div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-46467989722663345302010-03-21T11:32:00.003+09:002010-03-21T11:43:01.695+09:00Barstow Reunion in Seoul?Jesse made it to Seoul safely and we met up with another fellow Barstonian, Kandie and her husband Kris. So far this weekend has been a merging of newer friends with our friends from home. It's pretty cool. I have a lot of things planned for us the next couple weeks like a trip to Busan, Soeraksan, and even the DMZ. It's nice to see Seoul as a tourist rather than a resident. I want to leave Seoul believing that it's a charming place and that this part in my life was an awesome chapter. <div><br /></div><div>Although it's still cold it's starting to feel like a vacation again. We only have a month and two weeks left in Seoul and Kalan and I plan to make the most out of it. My friends are already sad but I know that I wont show any emotion until right before I leave. Then the waterworks will come flowing freely. I truly have made some awesome friends so far. </div><div><br /></div><div>Sylvia</div><div><br /></div><div><div><br /></div></div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-70285655184967231562010-03-10T08:33:00.005+09:002010-03-10T08:56:40.401+09:00everyone's still a model<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><br /></span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh_ZoDG4oqvotj3RaZbgn4YxQPucEvCPqJX7A47vhRBCXOd-EjQ8qgDJ8L351NXt5KfZYBICClsJXyeA1h5fIIZ0Z_FH9ZS9a6Gysb2P5bfBM37n9kOkqtjlmlWUDHBWIl1dJxxsrDND19/s1600-h/IMG_0221.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh_ZoDG4oqvotj3RaZbgn4YxQPucEvCPqJX7A47vhRBCXOd-EjQ8qgDJ8L351NXt5KfZYBICClsJXyeA1h5fIIZ0Z_FH9ZS9a6Gysb2P5bfBM37n9kOkqtjlmlWUDHBWIl1dJxxsrDND19/s400/IMG_0221.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446786597952515698" /></a><br />Last weekend I sucked up any insecurities or doubts I had and I modeled again. It felt great and I had a lot of fun. I'll have pictures up within the next two weeks. Basically, it's all happening, again. I'm loosing weight, my skin is getting better and I'm feeling more chipper each day. What is the cause of this? I'm 100% sure that it's the weather. It warmed up a bit and the spring is on the horizon. Even though it's been cold these last few days and even snowed last night, many Koreans have been telling me that this is the last cold of the season. Spring is jealous of winter but winter is putting up a fight (or something like that haha).<br /><br />I thought that I would be nervous while modeling again but, strangely enough, I felt really relaxed. I want to do more shoots and try to get some work before I head back home. There was a time in the last couple months where I would think to myself ... oh you're not a model, you're getting old, you're too fat and ugly to model, modeling is a waste of time, and so on. But I like it and if I like it then I should do it. Right? Now that I'm finished with my language program, I'll have a lot more free time to work at achieving my goals.<br /><br />I'm still going to continue to look for jobs back home. I heard on the news that more businesses in the states are hiring temps and soon enough they'll be hiring permanent hires. Hopefully, the timing will be perfect for when I get home. Here's hoping.<br /><br /><3 SylviaSylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-73949623272545290162010-02-26T09:37:00.004+09:002010-02-26T09:59:42.025+09:00Pictures!!<div style="text-align: center;">

First off, the day before my manager calls me and asks me if I could wear blue or green contacts for the interview. That was the first red flag, but I just said "I'm going to have to say noooooo," and went on with my day.<br />The day of the interview my manager and I show up and is greeted by a nice gentlemen who grew up in the Philippines and speaks English very well. We speak to him for a while about my life and teaching in Korea. He was very personable and was easy to talk to. Then his boss shows up and the interview makes a complete 180.<br /><br />The questions I was asked:<br />Do you have a boyfriend?<br />What do you think about short guys? <br />How old are you?<br />Where do you live?<br />Is your boyfriend Korean or American?<br /><br />And I'm sure there's more. <br /><br />Throughout the interview he kept saying I looked just like a Korean and that I was thin and pretty. From this I felt like he liked me and that I probably was going to get the job. Then I overhear him saying something in Korean to my manager about an accent. "Accent?" I asked. He tells me I have a Korean accent and at that moment my mind explodes. I let it go and continue smiling and I try to be as charming as possible because, obviously, he wasn't interested in credentials. Turns out I didn't get the job because I was Korean looking. He wanted to hire an "original" looking American.<br /><br />Now from this rant you may think that I'm mad but I couldn't stop laughing to myself on the way home. "What on earth just happened?" I kept thinking to myself. This guy just outright asked any question he wanted to ask no matter how personal or inappropriate it was. It was interesting to say the least. It would have been cool to work at the Blue House though.<br /><br /><br />SylviaSylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-16483548512369319962010-02-11T17:01:00.003+09:002010-02-11T17:44:21.489+09:00Slush CityI find myself having to explain my Koreaness every day. I not only have to talk about where I'm from and why I look Korean, but I also have to deal with the social aspects of being Korean. Every time I tell people that I'm living with my boyfriend it is either followed by an awkward silence or a gasp. Korean girls here DO NOT live with their boyfriends before marriage. I've talked to several people who thought of the idea but wouldn't dream of going against their parent's wishes. Also, at my age, women are hustling to find themselves a husband so that they can settle down and quit their jobs. The fact that I don't have any plans to get married (after 8 years of dating my boyfriend) is baffling. I mean, it's not a race! It will happen when it happens. <br /><br />On a lighter note, yesterday, Kalan and I were on the radio. We got to go the TBS building and sit in a recording booth and everything. We competed against each other on a quiz show and I won. I get a prize but I'm not sure what it is yet. Hopefully it's a million dollars.<br /><br />It's been really rainy and snowy lately. Seoul looks like a giant dirty 7-up slushy. Yummy. <br /><br />Imo just brought some sliced oranges and apples. She reminds me of my mommy :)<br /><br />SylviaSylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-85653238008864728032010-02-07T22:24:00.003+09:002010-02-07T23:00:06.126+09:00Plans for this weekI have several things on my agenda this week besides work and school. Most importantly, I'm going to go to the 노래방 / karaoke practice room with Kalan. We haven't driven a car since August and we realized that the car is where we do 95% of our singing. I'm out of practice so we are going to go have some fun and sing our little hearts out. Maybe I'll sing a little Celine, Whitney and Mariah ... I hope Kalan is prepared, hehe.<br /><br /><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gzUUcY43EtI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gzUUcY43EtI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br /><br />Also, Kalan saw an interesting cafe in Myong Dong so we are gonna check that out, too. It's a cat cafe, which is weird because not many people here like cats. I, on the other hand, love cats. <br /><br />I'm taking better care of myself by exercising, eating better and going to the dermatologist. My skin has improved tenfold and I feel like I'm in control of my acne. What the doctor did was give me a weeks worth of antibiotic pills and then had me go through a torturous extraction parade/facial. It was the worst drawn-out pain I've ever had to endure BUT my acne is gone. <br /><br />I've been doing little exercises in my bedroom like lunges, sit ups and lifting light weights and I realized just how much of a Korean girl I've become. Not only is my tan almost completely gone but my muscles are gone, too. <br /><br />I can't do a push up... :/<br /><br />I will get stronger though so watch out. <br /><br />xoxo <br />SylviaSylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-66975217448115847972010-01-26T20:02:00.003+09:002010-01-26T20:41:39.675+09:00Simplicity is BlissYep, life is simple nowadays. Especially because I have more free time on my hand. Although I currently have a cold, I find that I have lots of time to simply think. I think about what's important to me, what I want, what I need, etc. <br /><br />Ever since I got my bachelor's degree, well ever since high school for that matter, things have just been happening to me. I never PLAN things. I've attempted to keep planners in school but... nope... they always end up in the back of my closet. Some people are good at planning things like their weeks or their lives. Well, I'm not the planner type of person. Things just happen to me and that's fine. After college graduation, because I'm not good at planning my future, you can imagine how things became overwhelming. <br /><br />I never even had a dream growing up. People wanted to be singers, doctors, actors. And me... I just like to dabble. I'm the type of person who has many interests and can't commit to one thing, except well Kalan. I know I have the ability to commit to something... just what?! I'm currently still in love with fashion. I'm not sure where it will lead me but I hope its someplace aesthetically pleasing. <br /><br />I've embraced my whateverness. For as long as I can remember, I've considered myself as a laid back person. When I was little my favorite Disney character was Pocahantas because well she was pretty and because she just went wherever the wind blew her. Some may call it waif-like but I think it's admirable. People like that have less fear than most when doing something. It also reminds me to not do something that doesn't feel right even though society thinks its the right way. <br /><br />Okay what's my point? I have no point. All I know is that this afternoon I was walking through Seoul Station today alone listening to my ipod and I realized that I was a whole ocean away from home. When I emerged from the subway I walked up the hill to my house and I saw Seoul Tower peering down at me from a clear sky. I smelled smells that, frankly, did not smell anything like home. I heard sounds that were loud and foreign and interesting. And I saw people. Lots of people with different life experiences and different perpectives.<br /><br />I'm a whole world away from home. Lots of people don't even look past their backyard. That makes me blessed and all I can do is learn from it and make the most of it.Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-51397285756399787582010-01-21T22:04:00.010+09:002010-01-23T15:44:41.937+09:00The Snow is Almost GoneHow have I changed since I've moved to Korea? Two words. Acne. Weight.<div>I'm 17 pounds heavier since I've moved to Korea. It's crazy. I'm not complaining. I stopped obsessing over it about a month ago. I consider it seasonal weight gain and I have no regrets. Yes, it was so cold here that I actually didn't mind gaining a couple pounds to keep me warmer. Winter isn't quite over yet but I've decided that it's time to take control. So I can sit here and type out HOW I'm going to lose the weight, but I figure you don't care and I don't care to type it out. Just know that I'm going to do it slowly and safely.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>What's life like nowadays. AJ's mom is playing cards with her friends loudly in the living room, Kalan's playing guitar in the spare room, and I'm here with tissue in my nose typing a blog. Life's good hehe. </div><div>
<br /></div><div>Nothing else is really new except I randomly partied with Green Day until 4 in the morning ... :) Hopefully, there will be more random and exciting things that will happen soon.</div><div>

AJ's(one of our best friends) parents, The Jones', have a lovely house that is comfortable, spacious, and full of all the scrumptious Korean AND American food one can eat. They also have two huge flat-screen TVs, one on which I watched Canada's Next Top Model hehe guilty, and a dog who immediately lowers stress levels when looking at him.</div><div><br /></div><div>And after a week of horrible commute experiences, which include freezing while waiting for buses, drunk guy harassing me, falling down the stairs, and being late for work, I decided to cut my time at Direct English even shorter and have this next week be the last. This means after next week there will be no more waking up at 5:40 a.m., no more sleeping the day away, and no more eating dinners at 9:30 p.m. I started my part time transcribing job last Monday. I'm not 100 percent sure on what the company does exactly but my job is to listen to news broadcasts from BBC and NBC and type them out. So far so good.</div><div><br /></div><div>Tomorrow I am officially a student again, studying Korean intensely, 4 hours a day 5 days a week, at Sookmyung Women's University. I'm excited because 1. I don't care about the grade and 2. I'm going to learn as much Korean as I can. Intensely. I may even make some more fwends. Great investment while I'm here, I'll say.</div><div><br /></div><div>Now, what next? I can't stop thinking about Thailand ... And I've also been thinking about picking up photography. We'll see..... I've been thinking about a lot of things.</div><div><br /></div><div>:P</div><div>Sylvia</div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-27000501262103509682009-12-30T08:37:00.004+09:002010-01-10T22:48:55.625+09:00New Found Motivation<div>Christmas vacation is officially over. Kalan and I just spent two weeks in California (which includes two days in Vegas) and I don't know how to express how much I really needed the break. First off, to see my friends and family was so amazing and fun. The roomies from 8 Merrimac (minus Lowam (next time girl)) were great and took us out for my birthday. We also spent a drunken jacuzzi night in La Verne with Jamie and her roommate Sayaka. We had FOUR Christmases and did tons more and through all the conversations I had with everyone I have a new outlook on my time here in Korea.</div><div> </div><br /><div>Things were getting really frustrating for me before I visited home (aside from my trip to Tokyo and hanging out with friends). Mostly my job hours were waring on me and I was lashing it out on food and Kalan. I wasn't motivated to model. It seemed like the cold was just freezing everything in my life.</div><br /><div>But now, things are in motion again and I have a few things to look forward to. First off, January will be my last month at my job. No more split shift and waking up at 5:40am!! I start my new part-time job next week. I'll be transcribing NPR-type radio stories for six hours a week and make my rent plus more. On top of that, I'll be tutoring during my free time.</div><div><br /></div><div>Also, I'm enrolling in a Korean language program at Sukmyung Women's University. The university is really close to where I'll be moving. We are moving in with our best friends parents who have an extra room, a lovely house, a cute dog AND A DRYER! I'm so excited! Rent is miniscule to what we pay now, we wont have to pay utilities and groceries are included. </div><div><br /></div><div>Things are definitely in motion and I'm really looking forward to it all. With all my free time I can network and look for jobs in the fashion industry. 2010 will be starting off well and it's exciting to see what the rest of the year will bring. Hopefully, Kalan and I can start careers of some kind lol. </div><div><br /></div><div>Well that's my update. I'll write again soon.</div><div><br /></div><div>Love, </div><div>Sylvia</div><div><br /></div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-4181759348453708712009-12-10T13:22:00.006+09:002009-12-10T14:09:07.117+09:00Tokyo<div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Some pics from my trip</div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidIWalbAyP8_7u56vs5ZfkUnl8EIbmTXRvq6q8iyVhTFwTAgY3_Aq9iaIPLLOilGx7CrRmpsCUBfp99Cf3s-S0fvKAgA1HWRZuwN0FlgYF3Afv-FloYP7wJgw7MkUgNAag8LeAbt2o5dTS/s1600-h/CIMG1376.JPG"><img style="display:block; Christina and I started off the trip fortunate enough to take a taxi for the same fare as the bus. We got to the airport, checked in, got on our plane, and flew to <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Narita</span> airport without complication. It was when we got into the first subway/train in Japan when things started to get confusing. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Kalan</span> put it best when he told me the subway map looks like a giant bowl of rainbow spaghetti. Yes, the subway was impossible, impractical, and unrealistic but we managed to get to Tokyo station and meet our friend Bill right on time.<div><br /></div><div>Bill is a great guy. He let us stay at his house for two nights while he slept on the floor. It was kind of like a long slumber party because we had conversations about the meaning of life, girls, boys, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">progrock</span> and other random things. On our first night we went out to eat authentic Japanese <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">ramen</span> and then to a Japanese bar called <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Damo</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Damo</span>. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next day we went to <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Akihabara</span> which is like this crazy epicenter for <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">video gamers</span> and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">anime</span> lovers. Also there are these "<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Costplay</span>" stores with sexy costumes and hobby stores with crazy naked figurines. So to speak, this place was pretty different. But interesting. </div><div><br /></div><div><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Asakusa</span> was our next destination. This area is a little more traditional and touristy (kinda like <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">insadong</span> in Seoul). We hung out for a while and did some sight seeing and then decided to go to a grocery store and eat the free samples at a department store in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">Shinjuku</span>. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">Shinjuku</span> is where we met up with some of Bill's friends and visited some local pubs. These next few weeks are going to go by so fast and before I know it I will be in California hugging my friends and family and eating burritos from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Platas</span>! Also, I've decided to go on a special trip to Tokyo with my friend Christina next weekend! This year December is looking to be a very fun and eventful birthday month for me and baby <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">jesus</span>. ^^</div><br /><div><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Kalan</span> and I celebrated Thanksgiving the other night by watching 75% of Love Actually (problem with streaming movies) and drinking a tall can of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Heineken</span>. It seems sad in black and white but it was pretty fun and I got to spend Thanksgiving with the person that I am most thankful for. This weekend I will go to a Thanksgiving potluck on the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">other side</span> of the river with our friends from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Bundang</span> (some pictured above) and tonight I have an employee dinner. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Yay</span> food! </div><br /><div>It seems like the Winter is flying by already but I have to remember that January and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">February</span> are colder months. I hope that I can prevent the cold weather from making me unhappy, which it has in the past. Sometimes I feel like a desert rat in a blizzard, it's horrible. I'm going to make the most out of it though and make sure to spend time with my friends and do fun activities. Maybe I'll go snowboarding :/</div><div><br /></div><div>My Korean is getting a little better. I've been doing Language Exchange with my friend Gil Myung twice a week. He's preparing to go to Medical School. I still need to study more though if I want to get anywhere near fluent. Learning another language is SO HARD! </div><div><br /></div><div>I put modeling on hold until next year. It's way more difficult to get work here than I expected. I've been doing some research on Los Angeles internships and jobs in the fashion industry. I'm pretty sure when Summer comes I'll be moving back to California to try my luck out there. I need to get more hands on experience in the industry. I'm also thinking about going to school for Fashion Merchandising. Hmm... Maybe I can do both. </div><div> </div><br /><div>Anyway, I hope everyone back home is having a great Thanksgiving weekend. Eat lots of tamales and Delores' Salsa for me! I love you guys!</div><div> </div><br /><div>Sylvia</div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-64973065318550753362009-11-17T09:15:00.003+09:002010-01-10T22:49:49.150+09:00The Mechanical Dress<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXj8BifgQDQUi1j1kBKiNJHgBz6cra-qYOfnXf6eOfj2Dc0ZeZ-McR5swV0GED-LMGhIn59NdjGfENr1wVL0jUjeREoWffOBi_esCgF2uwdh0_LS1iZ1XTrefHXkOmhQJ8n2IuDgt92F_G/s1600/019.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404860634116238674" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 267px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXj8BifgQDQUi1j1kBKiNJHgBz6cra-qYOfnXf6eOfj2Dc0ZeZ-McR5swV0GED-LMGhIn59NdjGfENr1wVL0jUjeREoWffOBi_esCgF2uwdh0_LS1iZ1XTrefHXkOmhQJ8n2IuDgt92F_G/s400/019.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFRTa34AC68jrXH9g4d9VTgyJWIcUeJtI4GX9qKgJrhQ7HcIp9FJYMdEctjQ7tC1SfWuA3SCGXKOA9TY5QniihOahdvHtlL0RV7bWlJDiOuT4xUjRefdFwS7iQH-2DIUA1DGGRzsGCJwIR/s1600/023.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404860624715618674" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 267px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFRTa34AC68jrXH9g4d9VTgyJWIcUeJtI4GX9qKgJrhQ7HcIp9FJYMdEctjQ7tC1SfWuA3SCGXKOA9TY5QniihOahdvHtlL0RV7bWlJDiOuT4xUjRefdFwS7iQH-2DIUA1DGGRzsGCJwIR/s400/023.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEcMxhgBE9ijqZhtK4T7tP8hFqYrDq52xEfwDnVOo0IJ9B7rs4dq0h4zfdPcb8697xyL_FmNAKNppx7L-5JZE8-MmcbF8TAY_0pBndP2Aj7tQQRrRs_GQMzBt7X8iTvw3XAlykoapOl8R/s1600/030.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404860621718420690" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 267px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEcMxhgBE9ijqZhtK4T7tP8hFqYrDq52xEfwDnVOo0IJ9B7rs4dq0h4zfdPcb8697xyL_FmNAKNppx7L-5JZE8-MmcbF8TAY_0pBndP2Aj7tQQRrRs_GQMzBt7X8iTvw3XAlykoapOl8R/s400/030.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxrqviverKtlyUBFuuwBEYIMJUHR-pAdxP5IT1k5kdzPrPJJ2aoDiDAP88JnYsTKJeTH-LxVA_3luB2OIpOTydejbguLxHRwh7CXy9c_7JKWnLLcDPPgEfFx7nQ0saoD7r6MFL2gWknDUY/s1600/013.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404860616593400482" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 267px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxrqviverKtlyUBFuuwBEYIMJUHR-pAdxP5IT1k5kdzPrPJJ2aoDiDAP88JnYsTKJeTH-LxVA_3luB2OIpOTydejbguLxHRwh7CXy9c_7JKWnLLcDPPgEfFx7nQ0saoD7r6MFL2gWknDUY/s400/013.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />I just got my pics back from photographer Ju Hang. I'll have pictures posted soon. Both shoots were located at a bridge but they are going to look totally different from eachother. Sunday's shoot was great because I got my hair and make up done at a nice salon. The people at the salon were really kind and professional and want to work with me in the future. The MUA (make up artist) used all high quality products from RMK, Dior, Bobbi Brown etc. It was a nice change of pace.</div><br /><div>For that shoot I wore a mechanical dress. I can't really explain... just wait for the pics :)<br /></div><br /><div>Since I spent my weekend basically working (modeling isn't easy), I'm sooo exhausted now and I can't wait for Halloween weekend to come. I decided not to dress up and just have a casual weekend with good friends. I had a few ideas for a costume but .... eh I'm just not feeling the spirit here. It's kind of depressing I know. MAYBE I'll swing by American Apparel and see what I can put together. But MAYBE not because it's like twice as expensive here ... eh</div><br /><div>Till next time! Much love,<br /></div><br /><div>Sylvia</div><br /><br /><div></div></div></div><br /></div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-20107143699146161492009-10-20T14:46:00.007+09:002009-10-20T22:15:06.268+09:00Happenstances<div style="text-align: left;">The last few weeks have flown by like a whirlwind and just like that it’s Fall here in Seoul. Kalan is sick ... he has a bad cold and he's in bed with a few blankets that our land lady gave to us. He’s so sick he wouldn’t even eat the Sundubu (<span style="font-weight:normal">Spicy Tofu Soup) I made for him :( He's been resting a lot so I suspect he will get better soon.</span></div> <p class="MsoNormal">On a lighter note, I’ve lost some of my Korean weight. I’m so motivated to get to my goal weight and my skin is finally clearing up because of the Shu Uemura oil cleanser Kalan and I bought. I definitely recommend it. I’ve also been really excited for my upcoming photo shoots. Here are some pics of my last shoot with photographer David Kim. In the locker room people in Korea like to hang out naked and the showers are completely open. Okay that’s fine. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>The disturbing part was that I saw a women laying in the middle of the shower. She was just LAYING there! Everyone leaves their normal everyday lives to spend time in there hometown with their families and close friends. I call it the Korean Thanksgiving without the pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes. I thought Kalan and I would spend most of this time alone and sad but we ended up hanging out with friends and even making some new ones. <div>This weekend was also special for me because I've been researching some grad schools and I feel pretty good about it. I've also been applying for job positions in the fashion industry. The jobs are kind of far fetched (ex. Burberry) but how exciting would it be if I actually landed a job at a high end/luxery brand. There aren't very many solid choices for grad schools and fashion but I've been looking up some Fashion Merchandising and Marketing programs. I just need to fork out some mulah and apply now before the deadlines are up ... </div><div>It's kind of exciting not knowing where I will end up but at least it is some kind of path. The split shift is really hard to get used to. I don't think I've ever taken so many naps in my life, even when I was a child. I enjoy my work though. Not very many people can say that. I'm getting to know a lot about Korean life and culture from my students.<br /><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSIADYLnCjaNLj9Hjws1qckZJNPZERAji4Y6gfFgraIKkyPsHd1pwrFPbVxzAu_uQgoxMM10OSMbzjnfN97z44LBOxgEr_iqwIr2f9l6rWHj2ePOKFTXPuo9wb9JVS-1GMVQ9__7Lt0VUX/s1600-h/CIMG0862.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSIADYLnCjaNLj9Hjws1qckZJNPZERAji4Y6gfFgraIKkyPsHd1pwrFPbVxzAu_uQgoxMM10OSMbzjnfN97z44LBOxgEr_iqwIr2f9l6rWHj2ePOKFTXPuo9wb9JVS-1GMVQ9__7Lt0VUX/s400/CIMG0862.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384893080138952210" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a><div style="text-align: center; ">My office ^^<div style="text-align: center; ">I got a killer view of Severence Hospital</div></div><div><br />I've been watching every fashion oriented video possible to inspire me but now I REALLY just feel jealous and mad. Fashion week has just passed and the season's changing here so there are sooooo many things I want to buy but can't. Today I actually went to the Top Shop website and pretended to shop. I even add things to my shopping bag and everything. I think I got up to $400 before I quit. :P<br /><br />My photoshoot went well on Sunday but I haven't got to screen the pictures yet. I'll post them as soon as I can. Looks like I will also be modeling for an online store and also a french fashion designer sometime soon. I really need to get my energy and motivation back! Maybe this weekend will rejuvenate me. Maybe I'm just missing my friends and fam from back home :) Well, even though I miss everyone, I'm going to try and stay positive and do the best that I can to be successful ... push the limits ya know. Success is hard work.</div><div><br /></div><div>- Sylvia</div></div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-16884771065594718282009-09-19T17:29:00.005+09:002009-09-19T22:17:28.071+09:00Corn Bread<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Today was an exceptionally beautiful day. It felt like a warm day during Fall or a Summer night in California. I woke up refreshed and for some reason my eyes felt like they were more open or something. My iced americano from the Oratorio Cafe and my corn bread from an Ewha bakery only made my morning better. <div><br /></div><div>On top of my delightful morning I got to spend a few hours hanging out with one of my former swim students from Waterworks. His name is Daniel or Jong Won and I tutored him in English today. Basically we hung out together and worked on a Spiderman vs. Venom coloring/workbook. His mom Mi Ran is really nice and always feeds me well. Today she took me out for Indian food. We had Nan, Chicken and Curry and everything was muy delicioso. <br />They live in Ilsan so I had to take an express bus for about 40 minutes to get there but it was nice to get out of Seoul for a while and actually spend some time in a bigger apartment. Ilsan to Seoul is like Irvine to Los Angeles. It's really beautiful. Next week Mi Ran is going to take us to a lake near her house and hopefully I will have some more kids to tutor $$. </div><div><br /></div><div>I wish I brought my camera to Ilsan but I forgot it :/ For the rest of the day I think I will study Korean at a nearby Cafe and maybe watch Korean dramas a little later. I'm into this show called Style. Basically, it's like a Korean Devil Wears Prada but for TV and with a lot of Korean drama. </div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw-iriFVp0t0LEbNu9lXsDfNIPbJTVGH1cz84tNiDlZaBfNwea2czF1ym0t01BnG1TGhQxmz0JRGzAqkrzxmK-HgHn59XkExZdL1O3aSL2hNemHVgPTTY8XaiTqxw8gU9Ad4ZGTnyDVeDo/s400/style.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383096250157918658" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 242px; " /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;">This week I have two photoshoots booked so I'm super excited but I'm a little nervous. I was so consumed in finding job and working that I pushed modeling to the side for a while. It's a little nerve racking to jump into it again but I know I'll be comfortable when the day comes. I'll post pics as soon as I get them! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /><br />Fighting! <br /><br /><3Sylvia<br /><br />P.S. for those who don't know Fighting is like a "let's do it!" or "yeah!" type saying. ^-^</div>Sylbeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16463764719856886704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555773579898141908.post-68675425939435776232009-09-15T11:26:00.006+09:002009-09-16T12:38:46.400+09:00Finding a Routine<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Today, I've been in Korea exactly a month. I'm finally settling into the nest Kalan and I live in and I started working this week. I'm an English tutor at Pagoda-Direct English. Some people might have preconceived notions about Direct English like management is horrible, pay isn't good, hours are bad, etc. But, I consider myself to be lucky because I've had such a hard time finding steady income in the first place.<div><br /></div><div>Now, I'm going to try to "complain" about this as little as possible but I feel that it is vital to speak up in order for change to happen to the Korean society. Korea falls WAY short when it comes to equal rights. At my work Korean people who teach English get paid less and have zero benefits compared to Caucasian English teachers or "native" teachers. Half Koreans and non Caucasian foreigners have to work extra hard to start a life here. It's very backwards. If you are Korean I urge you to research online about how some non full korean people get treated. It's really not good for Korea's reputation. ANYWAYS, I don't want to write a whole essay about this but I hope this could bring SOME kind of light to the issue. I figure it's better than staying completely quiet.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anywho, I am very lucky to have this job as an English tutor. ^^ I really enjoy it so far. And after I had a chat with the recruiting manager about why I was being treated differently than "native" English teachers I can honestly say that I have no complaints. My co-workers all seem really nice and easy to talk to. It's very international at my particular branch and my breaks are long and relaxing.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm making some pretty good friends. I've even made some Korean friends that are willing to help me with my Korean. My friends are always giving me advice about where to shop, where to eat, what not to do and other things. It's very helpful. </div><div><br /></div><div>In result to socializing my little butt off, I've gained a few pounds (oops :/ ). These last few weeks I've been going out for dinner, lunch, coffee and dessert multiple times with my new friends. Now that I've started my job I can try to get a good and healthy routine going. I'm thinking about joining Hot Yoga. Maybe I'll stop eating the delicious waffles. Maybe. </div><div>Until next time!</div><div><br /></div><div>Best,</div><div>Sylvia</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfDYhsMjofmoCSqbgvTQr2ypehb7mD1QnU73nvrsbOYNo3r42BgmbxFdQYV8cKsUYXFMhyphenhyphenf29Gj1k1Go2XnBxubpKiyMCdypVt3E7t3lAAOOUItpYRB1RtWR2gjFo3QPq4q2AN78ZUwgCc/s1600-h/CIMG0806.JPG" style="text-decoration: none;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfDYhsMjofmoCSqbgvTQr2ypehb7mD1QnU73nvrsbOYNo3r42BgmbxFdQYV8cKsUYXFMhyphenhyphenf29Gj1k1Go2XnBxubpKiyMCdypVt3E7t3lAAOOUItpYRB1RtWR2gjFo3QPq4q2AN78ZUwgCc/s400/CIMG0806.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381526188177301826" style="display: block;
